the humanities for expression

Introduction & Our Present Day Moment

For over two thousand years, across cultures and civilizations, we have studied, interpreted, and expressed what it means to be human  through philosophy, literature, art, history, ethics, and the many disciplines that have attempted to map, understand, and at times divide every aspect of the human condition, behavior, and how we show up and engage with society.

One could argue that the very division of the study of humanity has shaped how we label and silo ourselves across our unique gifts, talents, areas of expertise, and the sectors we operate within.

And yet, the lived experience of the humanities and their essence in practice: thinking, listening, interpreting, expressing, connecting, understanding  is too often pushed to the margins and misunderstood in its inherent value and applicability to how we live, learn, lead, and operate.

We are living through a moment of profound technological and societal change, one that is reshaping how we live, learn, relate, and make sense of the world around us. The pace of this change is accelerating faster than our ability to fully interpret and respond to it, requiring not only the containers where we make meaning, understand, and orient ourselves, but the infrastructure to sustain and support them. At the same time, the capacities at the heart of the humanities — critical thinking, communication, storytelling, creativity, empathy,  cultural awareness and understanding are essential to navigating this moment.

WHAT is emerging...

What is emerging:

  • New forms of creative and participatory research that gather lived insight into how people are experiencing and navigating rapid technological and societal change.

  • Cultural practices and experiences that activate expression, creativity, and connection as essential human capacities.

  • Public engagement and shared inquiry that bring these questions and insights into classrooms, workplaces, communities, and public life.

  • Cross-sector collaboration that connects disciplines, sectors, and voices, joining up the dots across what has been siloed.

  • The visioning and initial steps to build cultural infrastructure to support, resource, and invest in these capacities at the level this moment requires.
